Plan for 4/7 Tech Apps

Hi All,

Sorry I couldn’t be with you today. My son is sick and I’m staying home to take care of him.

The first thing I’d like you to do is to finalize your advertisement analysis worksheet and submit it to me.
Make sure all your summary information (Total men represented by category, Total women by category, Count of entries, Average Men, and average women) is calculated with formulas — that’s important because we should always assume that our data is going to grow and change. When that happens, we want our summary information to stay accurate.

When you’re done with that email it to me as an attachment.

Next, I’d like you to get a head start on the research project that we will use when we’re working with Microsoft Word. Remember, you get to pick any topic you like. You’re looking for five different sources, with two facts from each and one quotation from each. Try to focus your research on a central idea for that topic — as though you were researching for a paper even though you’re not writing a paper at this time.

For each source, you need all the information you would need to cite the source (title, author, web site, publisher….) as well as the information you select from it.

I hope it all goes well, and I look forward to seeing you tomorrow.

Mr. McLain

Assignment for Monday, 4/4 — misleading with charts and graphs

Today’s lesson is focused on lying with charts.

Here’s an example from 2012.  Take a look at it and see if you can figure out how this chart perhaps misrepresents the data as it is labeled:

fbn-cavuto-20120731-bushexpire

Next, I want you to read through this:  https://cseweb.ucsd.edu/~ricko/CSE3/Lie_with_Statistics.pdf

And then, I want you to try it out with your advertising analysis from Friday.  Can you create charts that imply contradictory things?  For instance, can you provide one chart that shows women are underrepresented and one that shows they are overrepresented for the same set of data? No cheating, you have to use the numbers you actually found (if you want to add someone else’s numbers to your data to get a broader sampling, you may).

Group Maker Application

Today I want you to begin to make a ‘Group Maker’ application.

The page should have a section for students that don’t belong to a group. Then it should start with a couple of boxes representing groups. There should be a button to add a group, and it should be possible to remove a group as well.

The user should be able to enter a name into a text field and click a button to add a student to the ‘ungrouped’ section.

The user should also be able to drag that student to one of the groups to assign it there.

Think about how you want to handle it if the user deletes a group that has people in it.

Web Advertising Analysis

Today I’m asking that you go out on the internet and look at what images businesses use to advertise their products and services. Look at advertising they pay to put on other people’s sites as well as the front page of sites for companies that are selling something (e.g. macys.com).   Find at least twenty-five different ads or front pages.

Develop an Excel workbook with a data sheet and a reporting sheet.

The datasheet needs the following columns:

  • Site the ad is on
  • Company advertising
  • Product
  • Product Category (data validated from list on reporting sheet)
  • # of males pictured in the ad
  • # of females pictured in the ad

It may be necessary to disable ad blockers for this assignment.

The reporting tab should calculate:

  • Count of Advertisements
  • Total number of males depicted
  • Total number of females depicted
  • Average number of males depicted
  • Average number of females depicted

It should perform those calculations for all the advertisements combined, and also separately for each individual category.  The categories are:

  • Food
  • Entertainment
  • Financial Services
  • Healthcare
  • Technology
  • Cosmetics
  • Home goods (appliances…)
  • Clothing
  • Transportation
  • Recruitment

Website Rewrite

The goal of this assignment is to encounter and handle real world web design considerations. Go to http://urgencycareclinics.com.  This is a web page that was written without the benefits of html5 and CSS.  Your job is to rewrite it, yet include all the information it currently includes.

Use the tools at your disposal. Maybe flexboxes or float layout will help. Maybe a modal dialogue will help. Add images where appropriate, hover effects…whatever it takes to make this companies web site excellent and modern.

Look elsewhere on the web, too. What are great web sites today doing. How can you apply those techniques to the needs of this business?

Consider the user. Who is the likely target audience for this company?  How will they use the web site?

You’ll go looking around the web — especially sites that provide information or service for free — think news or television sites, weather, recipes, song lyrics or what not, and look at the ads companies are paying to put on those sites.  Find at least twenty-five different ads.
